I talked to my best friend tonight. She is a Christian. I am not. I have a Jewish father, and an atheist mother who liked to pretend to be a Catholic. I favor the Jewish side, as far as my beliefs. My firend and I rarely talk about God other than generally, but tonight she said her neighbor across the street is a Jew, and she wondered the Jewish view about Christmas. I told her a bit of my beliefs, that Jesus worship is idolatry, and Christmas is unbiblical. This is not what I wanted to talk about! The whole point was that I failed in the Jewish tradition of eating Chinese on Xmas, because my husband refused to go on Xmas, and I went for Chinese food today with my granddaughter! My friend discredited the Bible, saying that you just have to be a good person to avoid hell. Well, I don't believe in hell (eternal life for the damned), but I like the Bible. That's because I don't view it the way that Christians do. The Christian way of interpreting the Bible is nonsense to me. I explained that I could easily go to my friend's house for Xmas dinner, and to employee work parties, and think nothing of it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with God. It is cultural and capitalistic, the total opposite of the spiritual. That was a little uncomfortable, because we do not usually talk about this. We do talk about God, since the spiritual is central to both of our lives. For me, God is the antithesis of Xmas. Capitalistmas. It is an abomination, but I can easily join in things in its name because I know what it is. This household has nothing to do with it, however.
I am thoroughly enjoying this season, although I am somewhat worried about my utility bills, because it has been very cold. And this is California! We don't know what cold is!
